I began writing years ago because I enjoyed it. And I learned along the way that a great publication/site will combine must-read/view content with unexpected stories that refresh readers or provide a different perspective on subjects. I kept that initial joy alive by exploring new areas that took audiences into different directions:

• I wrote about Major League Baseball's initial efforts at online audio broadcasts for the New York Times, back before MLB.com became the power that it is today.
• I interviewed National Football League commissioner Paul Tagliabue in his offices for a profile of the NFL's online merchandizing efforts that ran in Business 2.0 magazine.
• And I covered several archaeological digs for the children's magazine Dig, including spending a wonderful day with Bill Kelso who excavated Jamestown.
